Date, Time & Location:

Wednesday, 10/05/11 12:10p - 1:00 p.m. Cullen Auditorium

Speaker:

Christian A. Otto, M.D., C.C.F.P., BCM Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Senior Scientist, Division of Life Sciences, Universities Space Research Association

Dr. Otto's NASA research focuses on human performance in extreme environments. He is also a member of the International Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research, Expert Group on Human Biology and Medicine, and an Advisory Board Member of the Center for Human Performance at the Texas Medical Center.

Lecture Title:

"From the Coldest & Highest on Earth, to Deep Space: Advanced Medical Care in Exploration Environments"

This lecture will highlight how remote medical care settings on Earth are shaping the development of advanced health technologies and clinical care capabilities for human spaceflight. Learn why ultrasound on Mt. Everest is aiding astronauts on the International Space Station, how remote duty medical care at the South Pole Station in Antarctica is influencing space medicine, and why remote telesurgery in the high arctic will help future crews on Mars.

Alejandro Garbino, Ph.D. will also talk about his recent telemedicine work with Dr. Otto measuring stress levels in participants of a Lunar Analog mission in Mistastin Lake, Labrador, Canada.

We encourage students, faculty and staff to attend the CSM elective lecture series "Topics in Human Space Exploration and Medicine." Please contact me if you need additional information about this presentation.
